Later it became a standing date with his daughter. Jim loved a good cup of coffee and had regular coffee dates with his friends and coworkers. They would spend hours in the evenings together reading.
They were avid readers and taught their children and grandchildren to love books and sniff pages. Jim and Dee greatly valued the written word. Their house, front porch, deck and backyard saw many family gatherings and were the setting of many memories. They loved working outside in the yard of their home, keeping a colorful garden of marigolds, petunias and later, Dee's infamous Pink Poppy. They traveled extensively, enjoying several cruises and visiting Europe, Mexico and parts of the U.S. They loved the slower pace of retirement, with Jim building intricate bird houses, researching genealogy and working eBay while Dee was watching her shows, ironing and cooking family favorites such as Turkey Tamale Pie, Stroganoff, Cornflake Chicken, Veggie Burgers, Scalloped Potatoes, Sugar Cookies with Orange Slices, and Marshmallow Crème Fudge.įor over a decade the couple spent winters in Yuma, Arizona, and summers in Eugene. Jim worked in advertising at the Register-Guard and Dee worked for and retired from the University of Oregon.
The family, which now included three children, relocated to Eugene in 1958, and the couple became long-time members of St. James and Dolores were married in June 1950. Here she met the man who became her life partner and best friend. She was living and working in Portland as a welder on the shipyards when she attended a party with her sister. Her parents, John and Mary Scheer, moved to Portland with their 12 children by train when Dee was a little girl. He returned to Portland to live and work, and at the party of a friend he met the woman he fell in love with.ĭee was born September 19, 1926, on her family's dairy farm in Fairbury, Nebraska. He lived there with his two brothers, Bill and Bob, and his sister, Maridee, until he joined the Army at the age of 17, serving during World War II. Dolores Ruth Scheer Frazer died August 1, 2021, at the age of 94. James Leroy Frazer died February 26, 2020, at the age of 91.
